Importance of Anesthetic in Dentistry
No one likes to suffer from pain. The same is the case with the pain during dental procedures; some of you might even get anxious and feel nervous. Having anxiety can delay the treatment and, in some cases, can make the problem even worse.
It is a lesser-known fact that anesthesia has been around for a long time; to be precise, it has been in usage since 1846. The first chemical used for the anesthesia purpose was Ether, and today, with the help of modern technology, we have made the process easier and less harmful.
An anesthetic is a drug used to induce anesthesia - to result in a temporary loss of sensation or awareness. Before starting any complex procedure, the anesthesia shots/ injections will be given to the patient. It starts working by numbing the tissues, causing no pain or sensation. There are different types of anesthesia, and depending on the age of the person, health condition, length of the procedure, the suitable anesthesia will be selected by your doctor.
Usually, the anesthesia’s success rate depends on the factors like the drug being used, the procedure, individual factors, the timing of the procedure, and the area where it is being employed. There are mainly three types of anesthesia -local, sedation, and general. All of these have specific uses and should never be combined with other medications.
Local anesthesia is generally employed when a procedure is short and takes less time to complete, like filling a dental cavity. The area where it is applied will become numb, but you will be conscious and can communicate without any problem. They usually take 10 min to get in action and can last up to 60 mins.
Sedation is generally used for patients who have anxiety. Sedation relaxes the person. They are categorized into mild, moderate, and deep. When you undergo sedation, you will not be aware of your surroundings.
General anesthesia is used for the longer procedure. You will become completely unconscious and will not feel any pain, and you will also have amnesia from the procedure. The medication is given through an IV or face mask.
